Cancer Cure Found? Clinical Trials Approved After a Breakthrough Discovery

cancer

A very promising and encouraging news for cancer patients all over the world was revealed recently. Researchers at the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute made a breakthrough discovery, regarding the cure for cancer and the clinical trials of the drug were approved. They discovered that the chemical, which they found in a rare plant from Australia, has the ability to eat cancerous tumors and completely remove them within just a few days. Does this mean that the cancer cure has finally been discovered?
Researchers have successfully managed to destroy cancerous tumors by using an experimental medicine, which is derived from the seeds of a fruit, found in the rain-forests in north Queensland. The experimental drug is called EBC-46 and it was produced with an extraction of a compound from the berry of the Blushwood tree. This plant is only found in specific areas of the Atherton Tablelands, Australia.
Dr. Glen Boyle from the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, who is the lead author of the study, said that in more than 70% of cases, one single injection of the EBC-46 drug directly into melanoma models in the laboratory, as well as into cancers of the neck, colon and head in animals, destroyed the tumors long-term.
Boyle said that in their pre-clinical trials, they injected the EBC-46 drug into their models and within five minutes, they could see a purpling of the area that looked like a bruise. About one day later, the tumor area went black, a couple of days later they saw a scab and after about one and a half week later, the scab fell off, leaving clean skin with no tumor there. Dr. Boyle admitted that the speed of the healing process certainly surprised him.
Scientists believe that the EBC-46 drug triggers a cellular response, which cuts off the blood supply to the tumor by opening it up. Boyle said that this is the reason why they saw a situation that looked like a bruise, forming in the tumor. This seems to be leading to the activation of the body’s own immune system, which then kicks in and cleans up the mess.
The experimental drug was used by veterinarians in almost 300 cases of cancer in companion animals, including horses, cats and dogs. However, there is no evidence yet that the EBC-46 drug would be effective in treating metastatic cancers, which are the cancers, which have already spread to other parts of the body.
EBC-46 is being developed as a veterinary and human pharmaceutical through QBiotics, which is a subordinate of the company that discovered the drug, called EcoBiotics. This company is also examining if there is a potential for a Blushwood plantation.
Dr. Boyle said that the ethical approval was recently granted to begin with phase 1 of human clinical trials, however, even if they prove to be successful, it is highly unlikely that the drug will replace the conventional chemotherapy treatment.
Since it is very effective for many people, chemotherapy is still being used. However, the EBC-46 drug could perhaps be used in people for which, for some reason, the chemotherapy does not work. This drug could also be used for elderly patients, whose body cannot sustain another round of chemotherapy treatment.
QIMR Berghofer and the National Health and Medical Research Council funded the pre-clinical trial and its results were published in the PLOS One journal. Since there are more and more cancer patients every year, this is most certainly a very exciting and most of all, encouraging news for all of them.
